USPS Mailbox Regulations You Need to Know
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that the USPS has detailed regulations governing residential mailboxes. Failing to comply can result in mail delivery being suspended until the issues are corrected, so it pays to understand the rules before installing or replacing your mailbox.
Height and Placement Requirements
The USPS requires that the bottom of the mailbox opening be between 41 and 45 inches above the road surface. The front of the mailbox should be set back 6 to 8 inches from the curb. These measurements ensure that mail carriers can safely and efficiently deliver mail from their vehicles without leaving them.
If your mailbox is on a rural route without curbs, the general guideline is to place it on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of travel, far enough off the road to avoid being clipped by passing traffic but close enough for the carrier to reach from their vehicle.
Approved Mailbox Types
All curbside mailboxes must be approved by the Postmaster General. In practice, this means the mailbox should bear the "Approved by the Postmaster General" marking or conform to standard size requirements. There are three size categories: T1 (traditional size), T2 (contemporary size), and T3 (parcel size). Custom-built mailboxes must still meet these dimensional standards.
Mailbox Support and Safety
The USPS strongly recommends that mailbox supports be of a type that bends or falls away upon impact to minimize injury to vehicle occupants. Massive brick or stone structures built directly around a mailbox at the curb can be a liability concern. Many jurisdictions require breakaway posts or designs that comply with highway safety standards.
It is worth noting that tampering with a mailbox, including unauthorized access by anyone other than the owner or the mail carrier, is a federal offense. This includes both the mailbox itself and any mail inside it. Understanding these regulations helps you stay compliant and ensures uninterrupted mail service for your household.
